Getting onto your roof shouldn't require a ladder, a second person, or dirty shoes on the seat.

The EasyRoof AccessMaster XL hooks onto the striker bolt in your car door β€” that U-shaped metal fitting on the door frame β€” and gives you a solid step right where you need it. Load a kayak, strap down a cargo box, check your tie-downs, get into your rooftop tent, or just clean the roof without contorting yourself.

Open the door. Hook it on. Step up. Done.

The AccessMaster XL has a longer standing platform than the standard EasyRoof AccessMaster β€” 21.1 cm instead of 15.6 cm. More surface underfoot means a steadier, more planted stance when you're up there β€” especially if you're up and down a lot. Folds flat, stows in the car.

How it works

1. Open your car door.
The striker bolt β€” the U-shaped fitting on the door frame β€” is right there, at door-latch height on the B-pillar.

2. Hook on the step.
Loop the AccessMaster XL over the striker bolt. Takes about two seconds.

3. Step up.
Push up, use the roof or rack to steady yourself. The hook grips the striker under load; it doesn't wobble.

4. Pack it away.
Unhook, fold flat, stow it in the car. Door pocket, center console, gear bag β€” wherever it fits.

What makes it work

Hooks onto the strongest point in your door frame.
The striker bolt is the component that keeps your door closed in a collision β€” a structural anchor, not a decorative fitting. Per SAE Document J839B (the US automotive standard for door latch systems), the striker bolt must withstand:

  • 2,000 lbs of horizontal force β€” sideways, what keeps your door closed in a crash.
  • 2,500 lbs of vertical force β€” straight down, the same direction as someone standing on the EasyRoof AccessMaster XL.

That's what this step hooks onto.

Rated to 310 lbs.
The step itself is manufacturer-rated to 310 lbs / 140 kg. That's the platform, the hook, and the full assembly. Same rating as the standard EasyRoof AccessMaster.

Longer platform β€” steadier footing.
At 21.1 Γ— 8 cm (8.3 Γ— 3.15 in), the AccessMaster XL gives you roughly 35% more platform length than the standard step β€” more surface underfoot and a steadier stance, instead of balancing on a narrow step. More comfortable, more stable footing for regular use.

Non-slip surface β€” secure footing.
Textured aluminum platform. You're not balancing on a peg; you're standing on a step.

Rubber-backed β€” won't mark your door frame.
Contact points are rubber-backed. Normal use won't scratch paint or the door frame.

Folds flat, stows in the car.
Fold it flat after use. Door pocket, center console, gear bag β€” it doesn't take up real space.

What people use it for

The most common use is loading gear onto a roof rack β€” kayaks, cargo boxes, bikes, skis, surfboards. One person, no ladder, no second pair of hands.

Where the AccessMaster XL earns its extra length is in regular use. When you're getting into a rooftop tent every night, loading the kayaks every trip, or adjusting cargo on every run, comfortable footing matters.

  • Rooftop tent access β€” in and out without stepping on your seats, trip after trip
  • Snow removal β€” clearing the roof on a ski trip without standing on the vehicle
  • Washing the roof β€” reaching the center of a tall truck without stretching
  • Mid-trip adjustments β€” tie-downs, re-centering cargo, tightening straps

Bonus: the step includes a glass-break tip for emergency use. Useful to know about β€” not the reason you're buying it.

Will it fit your vehicle?

The EasyRoof AccessMaster XL works with any vehicle that has a standard U-shaped door striker bolt. Open your car door and look at the door frame β€” you'll see the U-shaped metal fitting. If it's accessible and sticks out from the frame, the step will work. Most SUVs, trucks, 4-door sedans, and wagons are fine.

Some vehicles have striker bolts that are flush with the frame, recessed, or a different shape. On those, the hook can't engage properly. If you're not sure, email us a photo of your striker bolt and we'll tell you before you buy.

Common questions

It works with any vehicle that has a standard U-shaped door striker bolt. Open your car door and look at the door frame β€” you'll see the U-shaped metal fitting. If it's accessible (not flush or recessed), the AccessMaster XL will work.

If you're not sure, email a photo of your striker bolt to mayday@ancestraloutdoors.com and we'll tell you.

They're two different parts. The striker bolt is the U-shaped metal fitting bolted into the door frame (the B-pillar). The latch is the spring-loaded mechanism inside the door that grabs the striker when the door closes. The AccessMaster XL hooks onto the striker β€” the frame-side component. It's sometimes called a "door latch step" in listings, but the striker bolt is what it actually attaches to.

The contact points are rubber-backed. In normal use it won't mark the door frame or paint.

Yes, on most 4-door vehicles. Rear door striker positions vary β€” some sit higher or at a different angle. Same rule: if you can see and reach the U-shaped striker bolt, it'll work.

The EasyRoof AccessMaster XL is manufacturer-rated 310 lbs / 140 kg β€” the same rating as the standard EasyRoof AccessMaster. The striker bolt it hooks onto is governed by SAE Document J839B (the US automotive standard for door latch systems), which requires it to withstand:

  • 2,500 lbs of vertical force β€” straight down, the same direction as someone standing on the step
  • 2,000 lbs of horizontal force β€” sideways, what keeps your door closed in a crash

It's one of the strongest structural points in the door assembly.door assembly.

No. The EasyRoof AccessMaster XL ships as the step only, in a plain box. No storage bag for now.

Same mechanism β€” same hook, same striker-bolt attachment, same rubber-backed contact points, same 310 lb rating.

The difference is the standing platform: the EasyRoof AccessMaster XL is roughly 35% longer (21.1 cm vs. 15.6 cm) β€” more surface underfoot, so you get a steadier, more planted stance for regular use. If you load gear or get into your RTT on every trip, that extra length is the point.

If you use a step occasionally β€” a few times a season, getting up there when you need to β€” the AccessMaster does that well.

If you use it regularly, or you've tried a standard step and wanted a bit more room to stand, the AccessMaster XL is your choice. The mechanism is identical; the platform is longer.
